OMG I am GEEKING OUT! So you know how I have been enjoying and loving those gigantic cactuses 🌵 I got from my neighbor awhile back? I have posted pictures of their flowers this year. They bloom for one night and pretty much die mid-day. Then I was nerding out about these bright hot pink and orange bulbs the produced. Noticed they would get super fat, spilt open and were white inside with black seeds. I was thought to myself "that kinda looks like a dragon fruit, how weird."
Just the other day my girl dropped some knowledge that Dragon Fruit does come from cactus! So today I went out and took one of those bright bulbs off and cut it open. Before I threw it into my mouth, I remembered how that guy died in the movie "Into The Wild" from eating wrong berries, so I Google searched "cactus fruit" and to my freaking surprise this very fruit popped up!
It is a Peruvian Apple Cactus Fruit! They are thornless and vary in skin colour from violet-red to yellow. The edible flesh is white and contains small, edible, crunchy seeds. The flesh sweetens as the fruit opens out fully.
It totally tasted between an apple and a kiwi. Insides look just like a dragon fruit and is a type of pitaya. Ahhhhh HOW COOL IS THAT?!?!?! Free tropical fruit! Now I am just so bummed I didn't find this out sooner!
Here is a video of a guy eating them for the first time too:
